The Weight of a Piano Book Launch
Houston author Chris Cander is releasing her next book, The Weight of a Piano, on January 22, 2019. This Kirkus Starred Review follows the interweaving stories of two women—a Soviet concert pianist and a young mechanic in California—and their shared, devastating connection to the same Blüthner piano, its tragic history, and to each other. In post-WW2 Russia, young pianist Katya Zeldin receives what will become her most prized possession: a Blüthner piano. The piano is the most constant presence of her short life, accompanying her as she marries, flees Russia with her husband and young son as Soviet Refusniks, and re-settles in Los Angeles. In modern day, Clara Lundy struggles to let go of the same Blüthner, which she’s been dragging around with her since her father gifted it to her for her 12th birthday, just before his sudden and unexplained death. Using music and creative passion to illustrate how one object can become the focal point of a lifelong struggle, The Weight of a Piano is ultimately about how we reconcile the present with the past, and how to do so we must sometimes let go of our idealized sense of both.
Three scenes will be staged for the book launch. Pianist Konner Scott will perform selected work from the novel, including--for the first time in public--"Die Reise", the original piece he composed that appears at the end of the story.

The Hunchback of Seville
The highly anticipated spring show for Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company is set at the turn of the century, after Christopher Columbus’s return from the New World. Hunchback is a madcap re-telling of Spanish history and the evils of colonialism. As Queen Isabella is dying, her brilliant and disfigured adopted sister, Maxima Terriblé Segunda, is called in from her forced seclusion to run the county. Maxima then works her way through politics, religion, and prejudice to save her country without sacrificing herself in the process.

Captain Ariadne Minos must ferry the latest fourteen tributes to her home planet of Crete, where they will be fed as sacrifices to a fearsome bull. On the journey, she makes a surprise connection to two of her more forceful passengers: the headstrong prince Theseus, and Pneuma, a Healer who is outraged to face death with her medical education incomplete. However, as the spaceship nears its final destination, Ariadne must weigh the comfort of her new friends against family loyalties which have haunted her across the galaxy. The time has come for her to reconcile between monsters, gods, and men.
